Where to snorkel on your own in Oahu?

The best independent snorkeling spots on Oahu are Hanauma Bay, Sharks Cove, and Electric Beach. Hanauma Bay requires a $25 reservation but delivers the island's best reef fish density — go early to avoid crowds. Sharks Cove on the North Shore is free, excellent in summer, and features lava tube swim-throughs. Electric Beach near Ko Olina has warm outflow water from a power plant that draws sea turtles, dolphins, and vibrant fish — and it's free with roadside parking. Lanikai Beach on the Windward side has clear turquoise water and is rarely crowded. Rent snorkel gear at ABC Stores or dive shops for around $10–20 per day. Check surf conditions before visiting any North Shore spot from October through April.
