What is the best time of day to snorkel at Hanauma Bay?

Early morning is the best time to snorkel at Hanauma Bay. The bay opens at 6:45 AM and the first entry wave has the calmest water, clearest visibility, and fewest visitors. Fish are most active in the cooler morning hours and the light angle between 7-10 AM creates optimal underwater photography conditions. By 11 AM the beach fills significantly, the water becomes churned by swimmers, and afternoon trade winds can reduce surface visibility. Arrive at or before 6:30 AM for walk-in entry if you don't have a reservation — the limited walk-in slots fill at 7:00 AM. Weekdays (Tuesday–Thursday) are always less crowded than weekends. The bay is closed Mondays and Tuesdays for conservation. Water clarity is typically best in summer (May–September) when north swells don't stir up sediment.
