Is Waikiki a good place to learn to surf?
Yes — Waikiki is one of the best places in the world to learn to surf. The beach break at Canoe Beach and Queens has a sandy bottom, consistent 1-3 foot waves, warm water (78°F year-round), and long ride times that give beginners multiple opportunities per wave. Hawaiian surfing was born in these waters — ancient Hawaiian royalty surfed Waikiki's gentle breaks for centuries. The high density of surf schools means strong competition for students, keeping prices competitive and instructor quality high. Hans Hedemann Surf School (5–400), North Shore Surf School (00–225), and Jamie O'Brien (5–209) all operate in Waikiki with certified instructors. The main limitation: Waikiki waves are very forgiving, which is excellent for learning but means you'll plateau quickly. After mastering the basics in Waikiki, progression to intermediate spots requires moving to the North Shore or other breaks.
