Is Sharks Cove better than Hanauma Bay for snorkeling?

Hanauma Bay and Sharks Cove serve different snorkelers. Hanauma Bay is ideal for beginners and families — calm water, abundant reef fish, and a well-managed marine reserve. Entry is $25 and reservations are required. Sharks Cove on the North Shore is better for intermediate and advanced snorkelers who want lava tubes, ledges, and more dramatic marine life. The surge at Sharks Cove can be strong and it closes during high surf (October–April). Sharks Cove is free and requires no reservation. If you have kids or are new to snorkeling, Hanauma Bay wins. If you're an experienced swimmer looking for adventure and don't mind the drive, Sharks Cove offers a more exciting experience. Visit Sharks Cove in summer for calmer conditions.
