Is Hanauma Bay or Sharks Cove better?

They serve different snorkelers. Hanauma Bay is better for beginners, families with kids, and anyone who wants calm water, abundant reef fish, and on-site facilities including gear rental and a snack bar. Entry costs 5 with advance reservations required. Sharks Cove is better for intermediate snorkelers who want lava tubes, ledges, and more dramatic topography — it's free with no reservation but has no facilities. Sharks Cove is only good in summer (May–September) when North Shore swells are calm; winter surf makes it dangerous. Hanauma Bay is open year-round (closed Monday and Tuesday). If traveling with first-time snorkelers or children, choose Hanauma Bay. If you're an experienced swimmer visiting in summer who wants adventure at no cost, Sharks Cove wins. Hawaii Nautical (0–150) offers guided snorkel tours as an alternative to both.
