Can you still snorkel in Hanauma Bay?
Yes, Hanauma Bay is fully open for snorkeling. The bay closed 2020–2022 for renovation and pandemic restrictions, reopening with a new reservation system and enhanced visitor management. Current hours are 6:45 AM–4 PM, closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Entry is 5 per person for non-residents; advance reservations are required at hanauma-bay.org and sell out days in advance. Snorkel gear rentals are available on site for around 5. The reef and fish population benefited from the extended closure — marine life density improved noticeably after reopening. The bay remains one of Oahu's best snorkeling spots for beginners and families due to its calm, protected water and abundant reef fish. Photography is excellent in morning light. Check the website before visiting as closures occur for maintenance and weather events.
