What to stay away from in Maui?

Several Maui experiences consistently disappoint. Lahaina town remains largely closed for rebuilding after the 2023 wildfire — visiting to browse shops is not possible as of 2026. Old Lahaina Luau and Feast at Lele both closed permanently after the fire. Avoid booking tours from aggressive street vendors in Kaanapali or Kihei who sell overpriced activity packages with hidden fees — book directly with operators. During whale season (December–April), avoid companies without certified naturalists on board. Skip Maui's highway drive without checking current road closures — the Kahekili Highway on the north coast is scenic but narrow and can be temporarily closed after heavy rain. Always check for swim advisories before entering the water, particularly on the north and east shores during winter swell season.
