Is it safe to snorkel in Molokini Crater?

Yes — Molokini Crater is safe for snorkeling. All commercial tours are US Coast Guard certified with safety equipment, trained crew, and mandatory life vests. The interior of the crater is calm and shallow enough for beginners. Operators provide full briefings, flotation devices for weak swimmers, and crew supervision in the water. Beginner swimmers should choose Four Winds (0–180) that provide buoyancy noodles and stay in the shallow inner bay. Stronger swimmers can explore the outer edges where current is present. Hawaii requires operators to file float plans and maintain coast guard radio contact. The main safety consideration is sun exposure — reflective water amplifies UV intensity significantly. Apply reef-safe sunscreen 30 minutes before entering the water and wear a rash guard for extended snorkeling. Dehydration is also common — drink water before and after.
