Are there sharks around Molokini Crater?
Yes, sharks are present around Molokini Crater, but encounters are rare and attacks essentially unheard of. The outer crater wall drops to 300 feet and attracts whitetip reef sharks, blacktip reef sharks, and occasionally Galapagos sharks. In the inner crater where tourists snorkel, sharks are far less common — the shallow, enclosed bay is not typical shark habitat. Operators like Pride of Maui (15–241) and Four Winds (0–180) conduct thousands of tours annually with no shark incidents. Hawaii's coral reef sharks are generally timid and avoid human activity. The more likely wildlife encounters at Molokini are with sea turtles, eagle rays, and spinner dolphins. If you see a shark while snorkeling, stay calm, don't thrash, and move slowly toward the boat. The risk is genuinely minimal — statistically, Molokini snorkeling is far safer than driving to the harbor.
