Does Mark Zuckerberg own Kauai?
Mark Zuckerberg owns a significant private estate on Kauai's north shore but does not own the island. Since 2014, he has purchased approximately 1,400 acres in the Princeville and Kilauea areas. His acquisition made headlines in 2023 when legal disputes arose over native Hawaiian families' access rights under traditional kuleana laws. The estate is not open to visitors. Kauai remains a public island — Hawaii law guarantees beach access to all, and state and county lands are extensive. Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park, Waimea Canyon, Kokee State Park, and all of Kauai's beaches remain publicly accessible. Zuckerberg's property represents a small fraction of Kauai's 562 square miles. The controversy did raise important conversations about land ownership and native Hawaiian rights on the island.
