What month is best for whale watching in Hawaii?

February is the best month for whale watching in Hawaii across all islands. North Pacific humpback whale population peaks in Hawaiian waters in late January through early February — the breeding and calving season reaches its height, producing the most surface activity including breaching, tail slapping, and competitive male groups. January is a close second. The season runs December through April, with December marking the arrival of the first whales and April their departure. Maui's Au'au Channel (between Maui, Molokai, and Lanai) hosts the highest whale concentration in the state. Pacific Whale Foundation (0–170) and Ultimate Whale Watch (7–195) run multiple departures daily during peak season. On the Big Island, Body Glove Cruises (9–140) spots humpbacks incidentally during winter snorkel tours. Book February whale watching tours 2-3 weeks ahead — morning departures on Maui sell out consistently.
